Crane fly with Mites (detail) - Tipula borealis

Size: mites: ~1 mm
Chen Young identified this Crane fly as Tipula (Beringotipula) and probably species of borealis.

He also notes:
"As for the mites, they are not just taking a ride, they are actually sucking body juice out of the crane fly. They are general feeders and are not species specific. They have been recorded in many different groups of insects, especially large beetles."
