Tobacco hornworm - Manduca sexta - Manduca sexta

Tobacco hornworm - Manduca sexta - Manduca sexta
Stewartsville, Warren County, New Jersey, USA
August 1, 2005
Size: 3 Inches
I looked for tomato pests and decided it must be a tomato hornworm. The image on this site from Hannah Nendick-Mason (Photo#4277) and a description on the Kansas State Research & Extension site shows that this is the tobacco hornworm, with 7 diagonal white stripes and a red horn. The tomato hornworm has "V" shaped markings with a horn that is often black.

This specimen is about half the size of some others I removed from the tomato plant in the previous couple of weeks.
