peeping tom - Prionus imbricornis

peeping tom - Prionus imbricornis
Augusta, Columbia County, Georgia, USA
June 3, 2009
Size: 3 inches maybe 4
I heard something scratching at the window and found this guy...I never thought I'd describe a beetle as 'cute' but, this one kind of was with those HUGE antenna and furry belly. I'd love to know more about this beetle and having a proper name would help me look it up. Can anyone help name this peeping beetle?

With that many antennal segments, probably Prionus imbricornis.
Here's looking at you ;-)

I Like It
I love shots when critters do things we can relate to. We would like to think they have human characteristics, much like our cats and dogs.

love it
That's a great picture of the beetle standing, looking in the window. It needs to be some kind of greeting card.

As Bobby mentioned...
You date is showing December 31, 1969. To correct this you can click EDIT under the image and enter the date again.

This is pretty funny :)

This is a Longhorned Beetle, but I don't know much about them, so wait for someone else to tell you something more specific. There are a ton of species (just try searching the guide and you'll see).

Also, you might want to fix the date.

Oops!
I don't know how I managed to screw up the date, it was pretty late when I posted last night. I’ve corrected it so it's now accurate. Thanks for providing me with the nomenclature so I've got a good jumping off point in researching.

You're Not Alone
I see you're just getting started. Welcome to the world of Bug Hunters. The more you find, the longer you want to stay up. After all, you might miss finding a species you haven't seen before. Maybe even something no one else has seen before.

After a year, when weary-eyed, you upload a butterfly and label it beetle, you may consider attending BHA meetings. But you won't because you love bugs.

BHA Bound
To my mother’s horror I’ve been collecting a while. When I was little I had shoe boxes full of cicadas and jars of spiders. Since recently moving back to GA I’ve got the itch again. The bug guide is a motivator because I know I can probably learn something in the process now.
