Marsh Fly - Dictya

Marsh Fly - Dictya
Upper Arlington, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
June 4, 2009
Two of these stayed on mostly a few grass stems and Iris leaves. They looked almost like hoppers from a distance in their resting positions and behaved a little like them as well (backing to the opposite side of the stem and short, almost hop-like flights to get away).

Dictya
[Sciomyzidae]

Thanks!
Very distinctive fly, but I hadn't seen one before. Not terribly close to a marsh (but within a mile or two), I wonder what they were doing in suburbia?

never mind common names
many marsh flies are not associated with marshes, just like most dung flies don't care one bit about dung...

similar looking to Scathophagidae
It's build and posture sure look a lot like a dung fly, but I haven't seen any speckled ones.

.
It does look pretty similar, I wonder if dung flies and marsh flies are closely related?

not exactly related
very different lineages
