Ambush Bug - Macrocephalus

Ambush Bug - Macrocephalus
Harshaw Road, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
June 3, 2009
Size: 5 mm
On Oak

Should also be...
a species of Lophoscutus...unless this is Macrocephalus arizonicus. M. arizonicus was synonymized with M. uhleri. Then uhleri was pulled to Lophoscutus and M. arizonicus was re-instated but stayed in Macrocephalus. So I'm not entirely sure, I realized this after I'd already made the comment. Plus, there only so many macrocephaline species found in AZ. I'll have to come back to this image. Sorry to be so hasty.

Update: If you're sure about the size, then that makes Lophoscutus much more likely. It seems that Lophoscutus species are around 4-6 mm long and Macrocephalus are larger than 7 mm.

Sweet!
Great images of the "other" genus of ambush bugs. Glad you made it to Harshaw Canyon. Did you do any blacklighting?
