Bombus...? - Bombus griseocollis Davenport, Scott County, Iowa, USA June 6, 2009
It has the brown on the back and the bald spot between the wings. I did not think it anything special when I took the pictures so I did not take a full body shot. Only after I came home did I notice the faint brown coloring. Do not know if the brownish coloring is significant or not. I would not call this a bombus affinis myself, but thought i'd check with the experts because i didn't see any "regular" bumble bees with the brown.
