Moved
Moved from Phytomyza verticillatae.
There are now more possibilities... see guide page for details.

The plant looks like winterberry...
...in which case this is what you've got:

Out of range?
My Audubon tree field guide says none of the Winterberry species are found in Eastern Massachusetts; one gets as far as Western Mass.

Ilex verticillata
is a shrub, so it may not be in that guide. It occurs in every county in MA, according to the county checklist put out by DFW/NHESP. Was this a tree? Ilex verticillata gets to be maybe 15 feet tall.

Taller than me
The mine was at eye level and the tree/shrub was taller. I. verticillata is not in my guide.

Were you in a wetland?
Or an at least somewhat damp place?

Wetland
The area was a mix of swamp and slightly drier forest, near a river.
