Two more usurpation attempts - Vespula maculifrons - Female
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 9, 2009
Today I knew something was up when I saw a strange queen hanging around the box. she would go in the box and constantly flick her wings, and whenever she would she come into contact with a worker she would attack and then release it. She would occasionally go onto the envelope of the nest but never go into the nest.

A few hours later I return to find a dead queen and a dead worker on the bottom of the box. This is not the founder of the nest, because this queen has larger "humeral yellow stripes" than did the founder

I looked into the nest to see yet another fight occurring!! Yes, two more queens were in the nest and fighting to the death, with the remaining workers doing nothing to help either queen.

This makes three usurpation attempts on this nest. The first was a suspected V. flavopilosa, of which the founder of the nest quickly killed
