Leconte's Haploa Moth - Haploa lecontei

Leconte's Haploa Moth - Haploa lecontei
Ozark Mountains, Searcy County, Arkansas, USA
June 9, 2009
Attracted to porch light.

Moved
Moved from Clymene Moth.

8107 - Haploa clymene
(no rsvp, thanks)

Haploa
I'm almost positive this is a Haploa lecontei variation. I've seen nearly identical variations a couple times before.

While I don't have enough experience to speak authoritatively on this ID, I think you are correct. The horizontal/lower black line lacks the hook-like pattern of Haploa clymene. Also, the Guide notes that the black markings on Haploa lecontei may vary considerably. ("Adult: forewing variable, from bold black markings to all cream-colored.") Coincidentally, an H. clymene showed up under our porch light last evening and I was able to photograph it.

Should I move this photo to H. lecontei or frass it since this moth seems to be atypical and it's ID is not 100% solid?

Move it to Haploa lecontei
Jason is correct. Someone posted another photo where the moth was very much like this, but in that instance the white hindwings were visible.
