variation. I've seen nearly identical variations a couple times before.

While I don't have enough experience to speak authoritatively on this ID, I think you are correct. The horizontal/lower black line lacks the hook-like pattern of
Haploa clymene
. Also, the Guide notes that the black markings on
Haploa lecontei
may vary considerably. ("Adult: forewing variable, from bold black markings to all cream-colored.") Coincidentally, an
H. clymene
showed up under our porch light last evening and I was able to photograph it.
Should I move this photo to
H. lecontei
or frass it since this moth seems to be atypical and it's ID is not 100% solid?

Move it to Haploa lecontei
Jason is correct. Someone posted another photo where the moth was very much like this, but in that instance the white hindwings were visible.
