T. lyricen f. lyricen (western f. lyricen) - MALE
Bryan, Brazos Co., Texas (27 Jul - 03 Aug 2005)
Latitude: ~30 N (Avg. Elevation: range of 300-400 +/- ft. a.s.l.)

Lyric cicadas with a high degree of infuscation in the wings, like the one in this image, occur in several states west of the Mississippi - incl. Texas, w. Louisiana, Oklahoma, w. Arkansas, Missouri, and se. Kansas.

In searching the web, I have come across other images of Lyric Cicadas from western localities, many seemingly share qualities with the specimens pictured here - in particular, the heavier infuscation and a tendency towards deep reddish-brown & olive drab coloration to the mesonotum (some so dark, they look nearly black).

NOTE: Populations to the north (i.e. Great Plains) and regions along the Miss. R. (eastern Louisiana, Arkansas & Missouri) may lack or show reduced infuscation, hence more closely resembling T. lyricen f. lyricen in the east.
