Flea Marsh Beetles - Scirtes sp - Scirtes

Flea Marsh Beetles - Scirtes sp - Scirtes
Middleburg, Clay County, Florida, USA
June 5, 2009
Size: 2.8mm avg
A second set of Flea Marsh Beetles, slightly darker than the previous set. When collected
under the door light, they were even darker than the others and also lack the distinct
3 dark transverse elytral bands.

If really 2.8 mm
I wonder about Scirtes tibialis

Scirtes
Skip: Scirtes for sure, with the subquadrate plate at the hind margin
of metacoxae. Of the 4 species in Fl, I can rule out S. orbiculatus,
and I found a comparative photo of S. ovalis on Fl. Association of Benthologists
Web site, but nothing on S. piceolus. For some reason, I cannot get
access to Harvard MCZ database. So, even though S. tibialis looks
like the best bet, I would feel comfortable w/Genus only on this one.
There is a key to species by Tetrault (1967), but I can't find that
either. Thanks for looking at them.

Scirtes
That would make more sense, as last night I collected 4 Ora texana's
that averaged 5.1mm, with all the black bands, white anterior elytra
markings, etc. They were almost double the size of these little guys.
I will post the new ones tonight or tomorrow. Thank you.
