Damselfly... Moth?

Damselfly... Moth?
Moab, Grand County, Utah County, Utah, USA
August 13, 2005
Size: 2"
This critter was batting around the porch light at dusk. It's shaped like a damselfly, but with some notable differences. Fuzzy antennae and "moth eyes" instead of the compound eyes of a damselfly. In flight, it was much less agile than a damselfly, and batting against the siding was almost silent compared to the droning buzz a damselfly makes. I also observed no overtly predatory behavior in the 20 minutes I watched it flit around the light.

Is this a moth?

Not a Moth .. An Ant Lion Adult!
I remember seeing these when I worked summers in North Dakota.
Look around for sandy sheltered areas for the larvae's cone shaped
ant traps. They are fun to watch.

Neuroptera..Myrmeleon? sp.

Ant Lions, Wow!
Oh, wow!

Ant lions are common around here. I spent many an hour feeding them ants as a kid. :-) I had no idea they had another life cycle stage!
