5th usurpation - Vespula maculifrons - female

5th usurpation - Vespula maculifrons - Female
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 12, 2009
This is the 5th usurpation on this nest!

And despite it all, the founding queen is still the leader of the nest. I am astounded

This usurpation was very violent, and it the wasps thrashing around inside the nest damaged the envelope a lot. to make it easier for them to re-build, I removed the damaged bit. It also gave me a unique look into the nest

The nest has already lost 6 workers now due to the fights. I have no doubt the nest would be larger if they did not have to deal with this
