black, red & gold beetle - Pedilus

black, red & gold beetle - Pedilus
Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, USA
June 12, 2009
Size: around 10 mm
Silis pallida look-alike. Flew in crawled on the house for a few seconds and flew away again.

Pedilus sp. (awaiting formal description)
I'm reasonably certain this is a female of what I will be describing as Pedilus joanae Young (manuscript name). Unfortunately critical aspects of the end of the abdomen and elytral apics are not quite well enough in focus to be absolutely certain. However, members of this species - and especially the females - do exhibit a remarkable amount of color variation and I have seen some matching the colors exhibited by this image.

Please note this comment is not a description and it should not be considered to meet the conditions of the ICZN.
