Odd Larva - Plagiometriona clavata

Odd Larva - Plagiometriona clavata
Assunpink WMA, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
August 16, 2005
Size: ~ 5 mm
The odd thing about this larva is the plate-like mass it held over its back like a protective shield. It was attached at the tail. Most of the time the mass was right down on its back. Occasionaly it would raise it to the vertical by flexing its tail - perhaps to control body temperature. The mass seemed to be more-or-less permenantly attached, but not part of the larva's body proper. In this shot, the mass is partially raised.
