Giant Leopard Moth - Hypercompe scribonia

Giant Leopard Moth - Hypercompe scribonia
Fox Lake, Lake County, Illinois, USA
June 12, 2009
Size: approx. 3.5 cm
We had a package of Pinion wood delivered from New Mexico and this guy showed up near where the box was left (not in the box) by the garage the day of delivery. I have never seen anything like this in our area and wanted to know what he is. He crawled very slowly and was docile, seemed to pose for his photo. I tried to move him with a glove out into the sun and he grabbed onto the glove and curled up on it. he seems to have wings or a shield of some kind and his tail curls under like a lobster. His black dots and circles are very unique and even had what looks like blue hair on his legs. I have no experience with identifying bugs but this one is so unique. I am very interested in knowing what he is and if he came from our wood shipment.

Yup, and it looks like this guy hasn't expanded it's wings yet, that explains why it is so tired, it just got out of it's shell.
