Pink Caterpillar. - Heliothis virescens

Pink Caterpillar. - Heliothis virescens
Sequoia garden, Lincoln Ave, Alameda County, Oakland County, California, USA
June 8, 2009
Size: 1" long..
One of my students found this gorgeous pink caterpillar on our last day of class. On a dried seed pod of the western columbine, Aquilegia formosa. The next day we found it was eating the green seed pods right thru the base of the ovary. Love to know what this might become...

These images always seem to migrate to the Heliothis page
though we're not convinced we only have one species there. We are awaiting Wagner's upcoming book on the Noctuid caterpillars and then we may all know more about these.

Welcome to BugGuide!
Hello, Sue. Good to know that both you and your students have such an interest in insects. This truly is a lovely caterpillar -- I wish I knew enough to give you an ID myself.

You may not be aware of this, but only you and the editors of the site can see your image full-size. The majority of people visiting this site who might be able to assist you with an ID can only view your image at 560 pixels on the longest side. If you would be willing, I'd strongly recommend cropping your image to focus more tightly on the caterpillar and saving it is a new file. To replace your current image with the newly cropped one, you will need to click "edit" under the current image and then click "Browse" (same as you did with the original image) to find the new file name on your computer. Finally, click "Submit" at the bottom of the page.
