Gum Grove Park, Orange County, California, USA
June 13, 2009
Size: a bit < housefly
This is one weird looking fly. The tail reminds me of a clam's foot. I found it on the edge of a currently dry salt marsh, next to a Eucalyptus grove.

An Aha Moment - Neaspilota
An import to keep down thistle. I've shot them in Peters Canyon, but your photo is so much better than mine that I didn't recognize the fly at first.

One with a tail-end more like yours is here: http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/diptera/Neaspilota.htm
