This large wasp--almost twice as large as the small black and yellow Polistes--"buzzed off" a bee to choose this drinking spot (honeybees water here all the time, using mats of algae or waterlily leaves. I have seen this kind before, but never got close enough for a really good picture. I went through the Polistes species guide and didn't find an exact match. These are scary guys to have in the car with you (they seem to want to explore semi-dark enclosed spaces, and readily enter automobiles if you leave a window or door open.) They whine around inside banging into the windows and the driver and passenger if they aren't ushered out before you start--they won't just go out an open window if you open it. They've never stung (so far) but they're big enough to be very distracting when they bump into your head.
