Ground spider - Sergiolus

Ground spider - Sergiolus
Alameda County, California, USA
June 10, 2009
Size: 1/4 inch approx.
HABITAT: Urban area. Probably outdoors, but I can't be sure. I first sighted this spider at about midday on a wooden box I had just brought indoors. I released it outside and took pictures.

BEHAVIOR: Seemed to seek camouflage by color. Whenever I brought the camera too close, the spider ran a few inches to some spot where a collection of debris (sand, weed seed, etc.) made the surface speckled and froze there.

Thanks! This photo just now appeared on the guide page, and the photo with the best match for my spider's markings seems to have vanished from there at the same time. I pulled it up from History and got its URL: http://bugguide.net/node/view/94226

Not sure what you mean
Your images and 94226 are both on the Sergiolus guide page, though the second one is on page 2.

Very odd. My previous comment
Very odd. My previous comment followed viewing a guide page that had eight photos in two rows. The last two photos were my photos of the whole spider. There was nothing like "1 2 Next Previous" at the bottom to show that more pages were available. When I refreshed the page, however, I got a different set of photos, which included spiders that had more reddish-orange. I kept refreshing and found yet different sets. One of these pages had all three shots of my specimen. Some pages had none of these. All these pages had the same URL and no "1 2 Next Previous." What's the page supposed to look like?

This is a MacBook using the current version of Firefox.

Ah! You may be in BROWSE mode
There are Tabs above the image which allow you to choose Taxonomy, Browse, Info, Images, etc. Browse and Info show you about 8 or ten randomly selected images from the category you are in. Refreshing gives you a different selection. If you click on Images, you will see all the images in a category, in this case 3 pages of them. Play around with the different tabs and see.

Oh.
Browse was the troublemaker, all right. Sorry, I don't know my way around bugguide--this was my first submission.

S. montanus in the picture from Alaska is the closest to mine, but the markings are not quite the same, especially at the forward end of the abdomen. Individual variation or wrong species?

Maybe Sergiolus sp.
in the Gnaphosidae. Let's see what Lynette thinks.

I agree
moved to guide page. It looks like CA has S. angustus, columbianus, gertschi & montanus. I've never seen angustus & gertschi.
