Mystery Bug - Mydas clavatus

Mystery Bug - Mydas clavatus
Tennessee, USA
June 15, 2009
Size: About an inch and a half
I'm not sure what this bug is. It's about 1 and 1/2 inches long. Under it's wing bases is a thick yellow band that goes across its back, but is only on its back (It's underside is solid black). I live in a fielded area with a few trees scattered around. I also found it's cocoon-like shell. It was partially sticking out of the black mulch in my front yard where we've planted shrubs. Does anyone know what this bug is? Is it harmful? Does it bite? Should I be worried about it?

Not an ID
maybe Mydas clavatus ?

Thanks
Thank you so much!

Thank YOU.
Thank you for sharing. Any chance you can get more images of the pupal case? It is a pretty rare thing to be able to connect life stages like that!
