Weird!
I wonder if it's a slug caterpillar, something like:

There is a lot of variety in these--you can see some others here (click on the caterpillars link to get rid of the adult moths).
The only other thing that comes to mind is some kind of tortoise beetle larva or pupa, like:

Obviously neither is a perfect match. Hopefully somebody will know!
