Big Springs mystery fly - male? - Suragina concinna - Male
Big Springs Ranch, Real County, Texas, USA
June 6, 2009
As we waited at Tony Gallucci's favorite spot for better looks at and photos of the Jade-striped Sylphs that were ovipositing, I spotted this critter and snapped some photos. They turned out poorly but hopefully will be enough to narrow to genus, if not species. I think I have the right family, based on overall morphology. This one looked distinctly more male-ish; I later got a somewhat nicer photo of a female further downstream. The habitat around this one consisted of water from a large spring cascading over rocks and through lush vegetation into the creek.
