Crane fly - Ctenophora apicata - female

Crane fly - Ctenophora apicata - Female
Shennandoah National Park, Virginia, USA
August 17, 2005
I believe this is some kind of crane fly, but it looks a whole lot like a wasp. Any help with the ID would be great!

to new species page, based on Chen Young's identification of C. apicata

Ctenophora?
Reminds me of one of the woodboring tipulids in the genus Ctenophora, but even more ornate than others I've seen.

Ctenophora
This is a female Ctenophora (Ctenophora) apicata. The other common species around northeast part of USA is Ctenophora (Tanyptera) dorsalis. - Chen

Body shape similar to
Ptychoptera but what amazing colors!
