Green Cutworm Moth - Anicla infecta

Green Cutworm Moth - Anicla infecta
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
August 17, 2005
Size: Approx. 1.5 - 1.8 cm
Came to porch light. Very tentative on this one. Possible Sugarcane Midget Moth, Hodges #9676 - Elaphria nucicolora? Looks similar. It looks like a borer. Help appreciated.

....here's a cool little exercise that sometimes actually helps ID a moth when measurements are not recorded (I almost never do so, sometimes to my regret). Wingspans for Midgets given in Covell range from 2.0-2.8cm. Assume Sugarcane Midget (not listed in Covell) is in that range. Compute the wing length in your photo (tip to shoulder) based on the number of screen wires it is equal to. Figure screenwire at 17 per inch or get an actual measurment/count. Wingspan (2 wing lengths plus 1-2mm) will probably come out to about 1.5 inches or about 4cm. Way too large for Midgets, but near the upper end of the range for Anicla infecta. You could probably also do this using thread counts on a sheet, but I haven't tried that yet.

I was on that plate too...
...and missed it. I did figure it was too large for a midget and I did look in Covell's. Thanks for the ID and explanation. My screen squares are 7 per cm but I did not know whether to measure to the shoulder or head. Now I do. I have been doing better at recording measurements but then I manage to get them mixed up with my descriptions and then they are of no use anyway.
