Cloudless Sulphur - Phoebis sennae

Cloudless Sulphur - Phoebis sennae
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
June 16, 2009
I see these all the time, but hardly ever get a chance to shoot them. A special credit goes to the lady who reigned in her bubble-blowing charges when she saw me poised with the camera. Thanks, Mom!

Do you remember the upper side of this one?
This looks suspiciously like a male Orange-barred Sulphur to me. Should have looked rather orange-yellow, with parts more orange. It might be me dreaming - just curious.

Not many butterflies are attracted to red flowers, but Sulphurs sure are.

I've seen a ton of sulphurs there, but....
never seem to get a really good look at them. Effect in flight is fluttery yellow; they're strong flyers and usually fly 8-10' off the ground. Will redouble my efforts to shoot them and post what I find.

Seems to me I rarely see...
...butterflies nectaring at roses. Is that your experience too? It certainly chose an awfully nice deep red to set off its brilliant yellow color. Nice shot!

I don't associate them together, either. It was all remarkably easy, with the b'fly landing maybe six feet from me. Plunk. Snap. Snap. Gone! That quickly.
