Unknown Ant - Dasymutilla

Very fast moving LARGE ant, at first thought it was a cow killer.

Hmmm
It is indeed a velvet ant, but I was under the impression that the "cow killer" title applied only to those big ones with the bright red hairs.

But there are so many varieties and who knows the rules when it comes to common names. But its been my experience that the ones pictured at the above link are larger and more dramatic than most.

D. occidentalis = Cow Killer
You're right on, D. occidentalis is the only velvet ant that should be called "cow killer." The family Mutillidae is so diverse and speciose that common names are rarely used except for one or two.

you were right about cow killer -- this is a mutillid indeed
