Robber Fly - Mydas clavatus

Robber Fly - Mydas clavatus
Tavares, Lake County, Florida, USA
June 18, 2009
Size: 1.25" approx
Photgraphed this today in my garden - I searched the guide and the only ones that I see that came close were from out west.....
He was quite large, but wouldn't let me get too close to get a photo - hence the fuzzy zoom.
Very dark black & shiny with an orange spot below.

Looks more like a...
Mydas Fly (Mydas clavatus) to me...

But please wait for an expert to comment :)

Mydas Fly
Seems like your right & a good match! No wonder I didn't see it in the guide.

This was awfully large & behaved much like a robber fly. There was a Diogmites in the garden this morning too, so I had robber fly in my head!
Thanks!
