very dark moth - Melanchra assimilis

very dark moth - Melanchra assimilis
New Jersey, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada
July 2, 2005
On wall of restaurant surrounded by coniferous forest. I think it's one of the two species pictured here.

Nice Photo!
... I think the subdued st. line and very flat appearance of the central wing area makes this 10295 - Melanchra assimilis. I would expect 10294 - M. pulverulenta to show a fair amount of dark markings, breaking up that flatness (plus stronger white markings). When I take this photo into an editor and remove contrast there is simply nothing revealed but unmarked "flat" area.

M. assimilis
I see what you mean about the flatness: compared to pulverulenta, assimilis has a relatively featureless wing with a less mottled appearance. Thanks for the pointer, Bob.
