Cellar Dweller needs an ID - Ceuthophilus

Cellar Dweller needs an ID - Ceuthophilus
Spencer, West Virginia, USA
July 1, 2004
Size: 1 inch
Camel criket? I came across this cricket dwelling in darkness in a very cool 'cellar' built into a hillside and used for storage for many years. With the exception of those times when people went in there the darkness was pretty much total. I haven't seen this species other than living in the cellar there. The 1 inch size clearly doesn't include those impressive antennae.

hi
its body looks like a roly poly and its legs are not big like that i wish i had better picture. i will try to use the macrolens on my camera this picture was taken with my cell phone so its pretty bad. i find one at least once a month and i'm not sure how they get in or how to get rid of them without using pesticides. i have no other bug problems so i find it weird that a bug this size could get inside. they dont make cricket noises either which i also find weird. ive searched the internet too with no luck

Camel Crickets
(also often called Cave Crickets) have a liking for dark, often damp places, and commonly sneek into houses, and particularly sheds, basements, greenhouses, garages, etc. I've never had any damage from them myself, but I'm sure some could cause problems if numerous. They don't make any sounds (at least none that we can hear). They are actually more closely related to Katydids than to true Crickets, even though the common name has "Cricket" in it.
