on milkweed. Is the fuzz on these their own growth or is it something that they picked up from the plant?

Red milkweed beetle
See here for images in guide. I suggest you move yours there too - nice shots and we don't have any for Colorado yet.

Lots of beetles are fuzzy or even downright hairy - it shocked me when I first started looking at them close up, as I had always thought of them as hard and shiny!
