Phantom Crane Fly Bittacomorpha clavipes? - Bittacomorpha clavipes
Greenville, Rhode Island, USA
June 11, 2009
Size: ~ 1/2" body length
Sorry to be late in posting this. It was about 8:30 AM on a cloudy, but not cold day. There was no wind. It was hanging on a flower that I don't know the name of. Its blossoms (light purple) had gone by. The fly was about 6 inches off the ground. It allowed me to get VERY close-up for photos, never moving. When I left to go inside, about a half hour later, it was just as I had found it. I recall a brief encounter about 3 years ago with two of these. They were flying, side-by-side, perhaps even touching one another. But they appeared to be floating on the air, rather than flying. With their color
pattern, they looked to me like two ring-like "somethings". I even wondered if I was seeing seeds dispersing. This is my second time seeing one: I'm glad it was not moving, so I got good close-ups.
"Phantom" really describes what I saw with the two "floating" along, their body shapes never really clear due to their body patterns and floating in and out of shadows. Wow!

moved -- nice pic!
