extra large moth - Callosamia securifera

extra large moth - Callosamia securifera
Hernando County, Florida, USA
June 20, 2009
Size: nearly 8" tip to tip
taken at night

This is a female Callosamia securifera. An 8 inch wingspan is a little too extreme though, these only have a wingspan of around 4 inches max. There is no species of moth in the US with a wingspan that large.

thanks for the update... thou
thanks for the update... though the wingspan tip to tip was from the tip of my little finger to the tip of my thumb with my fingers spread. it had to be over four " another shot I have of it shows it on my siding where the exposure between laps is 6"
