Good call Nina!
I sent this image to James Adams, who said that this is indeed Southern Pine Sphinx Moth – Lapara coniferarum. He noted that it is a fresh,
well-marked individual.
Concerning geographical range, he also said that Northern Pine Sphinx – L. bombycoides is possible in this area, so I'll have to keep an eye out
for that one.
By the way, your "2 cents" turned out to be more like a dollar!
Thanks again.

cool
thanks for the compliment! Sometimes I get it right. 8:)

Lapara coniferarum?
Here's the commentary on Northern Pine Sphinx at MPG.
And here is the commentary on the same site regarding Southern Pine Sphinx Lapara coniferarum.

I'd be more inclined to say it's Lapara coniferarum based on location-also, one of the MPG photos i"ve linked to above has the brownish color as yours does.

Mine is not a firm ID, just putting in my 2 cents.

One documented Northern Pine in GA
Here's a link to the map showing where it a Northern Pine Sphinx was documented in GA... have no idea if that's anywhere near where you are.
