While I was photographing the plant, ants were investigating this thing constantly. They didn't seem to be repeled by it, but were unable to penetate what looks like a hard covering.

Scale insect, I think.
Looked like it was stuck to the leaf, right? These are hard to ID so I can't take it any further than that - you could try searching this website US National Collection of Scale Insect Photographs. Looks like it's on Clematis so that should narrow it down.

Thanks so much for your help. Not only did it look like it was stuck, it hasn't moved for several days. I did a search for clematis host on the US National Collection of Scale Insect Photographs web site but it turned up nothing. I'll go through them tomorrow.
