Mole Cricket - Scapteriscus borellii - male

Mole Cricket - Scapteriscus borellii - Male
Auburn, Lee County, Alabama, USA
August 18, 2005
Size: 50mm
Thanks, Patrick, for your comments and possible ID's for the mole cricket. Note the close up image of the foretarsi of this specimen. I believe it to be a Northern Mole Cricket, Neocurtilla hexadactyla in that it seems to have four digging "claws", all in a row on foretarsi. Would appreciate your thoughts as well as any others.

Scapteriscus borellii ♂
This is Scapteriscus borellii Giglio-Tos, 1894 ♂. The two pale spots are characteristic of this species and the tegminal venation indicates that this is a male.

Claw comparison, hmm
What I think are:
Neocurtilla (Northern)/ Scapteriscus (Southern)

This page has links to larger images of claws, too. Hard to tell with the varying angles. Look at detail photos of
Neocurtilla/Scapteriscus, too.

Looking at the pronotum, too, I'm not sure. The photos of Neocurtilla show a more hooded pronotum, covering more of head. Scapteriscus has less of a cowl over head, more of a smooth seam between pronotum and head, in what I think is happening in my photos. On that, your photo looks more like Scapteriscus to me.

Tough! As I said, I've only seen one of each.
