Size: 2.5 inches
Found in folds of canvas patio umbrella. Umbrella has recently been chewed/holes appeared within last two weeks. Three of these caterpillars were present-two were active and one has stayed still. Discovered mid-day. A cocoon has large black dropping looking things on it, an egg sac inside, and a spider also inside it! Spider is small- eggs look larger and clustered/cream colored.Umbrella was out beneath a mulberry tree in May, then folded and stood under a nut tree of some sort (not Oak) during June. Upstate New York- very rainy season. Smooth, diamond pattern on back of caterpillar and subtle spots on sides. Caterpillar is gray and brown.
