a fly-like bee

a fly-like bee
Newell, Buena Vista County, Iowa, USA
June 22, 2009
taken in the evening was sitting on each flower as it stuck it's nose in the million dollar petunia and the shamrock. It ate for a very long time and was not frightened by close observation. Seemed to be in a stupor after eating . rested on the ivy and on the deck board. had the right leg out at all times and had a rounded bottom not elongated. no antennae noted and didn't make any sound.

that's it - a beefly
That's the common name for those guys. Yours might be in the tribe Bombyliini, maybe a Anastoechus genus. This looks kind of similar. I'm only responsible to beefly for accuracy though. :) I'm not an expert on these by any means.

thanks
thanks for the super quick ID. My friend was back tonight enjoying the flowers.

Agreed to tribe Bombyliini
Genus looks more like Bombylius, I'd say.
