Murky Ground Beetle - Harpalus caliginosus

Murky Ground Beetle - Harpalus caliginosus
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 20, 2005
Size: 23 mm
Found at a lighted wall at night. Chilled and posed. Length measured by photographing adjacent to a scale. It took up a rather odd, bent posture, even after warming up, as shown here. One or both forelegs were tucked up, sometimes causing it to topple over. It seemed otherwise healthy, so perhaps this was a "play dead" routine.

See guide page for identification references. I believe the size of this species is distinctive within this genus.
