Geron series from north of Death Valley - Geron - male

Geron series from north of Death Valley - Geron - Male
Mouth of Cottonwood Canyon, at southeast base of the White Mountains, Inyo County, California, USA
June 16, 2009
Geron probing inflorescence of the desert shrub Psorothamnus polydenius for nectar. Note holoptic eyes (implies male here), and yellowish halteres showing through the wings.

A technical character leading to the genus Geron in Hull(1) is visible in the wing venation: the length of "R5" (meaning the "5th radial segment", visible here as the last segment of the third longitudinal wing vein inward from the forward margin) is 2/3 or less the length of the preceding segment (of that same longitudinal vein).
