Large brown moth? - Callosamia promethea

Large brown moth? - Callosamia promethea
Washington, Orange County, Vermont, USA
June 26, 2009
Size: Large

100% sure
This is a female Callosamia promethea. C. angulifera doesn't range that far north.

I don't think this is a cecropia.
A cecropia looks like this: .

Maybe this is a promethea: .

However, I've never seen either of these species in real life, only in illustrations and as collected specimens. Let's wait for a real expert to weigh in.

agreed
Prometha looks much more promising. There is also the tulip tree silkmoth, which it resembles!

Cecropia
Hyalophora cecropia-wonderful moths, they only live a few days as adults. Smaller antennae indicate female, if I am correct, but I am just an amateur

Antennae
One more thing. Males have filigreed antennae for picking up a female's scent. It's hard to tell from this photo, but antennae appear fuzzy. If that is the case, it's a male.

No Mouth
Yep, Joe. A giant silkworm moth has no mouth and no proboscis to speak of. They live on food stored as a caterpillar. That, hopefully, lasts long enough to hit a few singles bars, mate and pass on their legacy.

Welcome to Bug Guide
Now you've seen how supportive everybody are, you can't stop with this one moth. Once you get the bug bug, there's no turning back.

Oh no! One more forum to be addicted to!

And the antennae are fuzzy, I just checked other photos I took.
