Polyphylla decemlineata? - Polyphylla decemlineata
Zamora, 9220 county Road 95, Yolo County, California, USA
June 26, 2009
Size: 1.5 inches +/-
Thank you for any help in identifying this beauty. My five year old daughter found this early this morning and we can't seem to find it in any of the basic bug i.d. books we have.

Thank you :)

Ten-lined June Beetle?
Your beetle looks very similar to Polyphylla decemlineata, which I know is found commonly in California. Here's an image of one from the guide:

Click here for a bit more info on this species.

I am only guessing based on appearance and it would be best to wait for one of our many beetle experts to confirm my hunch.

(By the way, it's very nice to hear that you can share your interest in insects with your 5-year old daughter. More children should be encouraged to study and admire rather than to fear arthropods!)
