A macro of the local basilica spider (

) that set up shop on the ceiling of our porch.

Questionable.
I'm still thinking this looks more like the basilica spider, Mecynogea lemniscata, but their webs are generally domed orbs, not strictly horizontal. Could be a young one? Willing to entertain arguments from either side:-)

Good Catch!
After I had thought it was a Leucauge, and after Eric mentioned the Basilica Spider, it made me think; although I didn't realize Basilica spiders were that far north, it did seem like a much better match . I e-mailed Marty to get additional details and provided photo links, but John and Jane's idea to compare photos was an even better idea! Thanks! (I agree it is a M. lemniscata.)

We think if you look at images of Mecynogea
and Leucauge
you'll see why Eric says yours is a Basilica
