One of several females frequenting the
Eriogonum elongatum
in my garden.
Note: given size refers to the entire length from head to the tip of the ovipositor.

I would really love to learn more about the feeding preferences of the local CA species of
Gasteruption
. Specifically, regarding their possible preference for
Eriogonum
(see my other comment

I suspect that they frequent
flowers for nectar also used by their hosts. Since they use a wide variety of bees and wasps as hosts, it would seem logical to find them in many different plants, as long as they can also get flight fuel.
After partly finishing the first sentence of this comment, a hunch drove me into the garden with my camera. I didn't see anyone on the buckwheats, so I looked around. Et voilĂ , I noticed a female in one of my Mallows:
