Humphreys County, Tennessee, USA
June 27, 2009
Size: approx. 2.5 inches
This was found by my 8yo today. I am always leary of fuzzy catterpillars since my son was stung by an asp when we lived in Texas. It had 5 sets of legs in the back & 3 sets of pinchers in the front with big black eyes. We are very interested in learning what type of catterpillar this is~ Thank you!

Yes, good to be careful
and yes, this is a stinging-haired caterpillar in the genus Hemileuca, in the guide here

Yes
This is Hemileuca maia, the only species in the genus found in Tennessee.
