Immature bug, not beetle.
Possibly Boxelder or Red Milkweed Bug

Excellent candidates
I'd guess boxelder. If you found it near that type of tree, or rain tree, or maple, that probably nails it. On the other hand, near/on milkweed would make the other bug more likely.
