it looks to me like the larve
it looks to me like the larve of Hyalophora ยป Cecropia Moth - Hodges#7767 (Hyalophora cecropia)sometimes called the robin moth and one of the biggest moths in N America. http://bugguide.net/node/view/28082/bgpage. It wont hurt the tree and if you want a real treat grab it and take it inside to raise before the wasps get it. you will be amazed.

what is this?
Looks like a second instar cecropia moth larva

i think...
It does look like a second instar H. cecropia larva. The colors look a little bit off, but it probably is. If you raise it up it can be confirmed.

Does anyone know what plant that is? It looks almost like dogwood. If you know the foodplant that can further confirm the species (although cecropias eat a large number of plants).

apple, its an apple leaf.
apple, its an apple leaf.

more confirmation
Apple is another recorded foodplant of cecropia...
