Orange bug with black spots - Harmonia axyridis

Orange bug with black spots - Harmonia axyridis
Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA
June 20, 2009
Orange bug, no rear feet, just front teeth/legs. Found on ground cherry and quince. Tops of leaf. Doesn't seem to move, holds on with the ugly teeth. Pictue says it all.

Ladybug pupae
These are pupae of the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis. The "teeth" are the larvae's shed skin, bunched up at the tail end. Adult ladybugs will emerge from these eventually.

Thanks, never would have guessed

Relief
I saw these on a tree that has had a couple of stressful summers and was very worried. I had no idea they looked like this in this stage!
