Sorry about the awful shot. It was on a blade of grass blowing in the wind. 2 other shots were even worse. They then disappeared. I first thought it was a familiar hover fly, but then saw that it was different from anyhing I'd seen, I think with the huge eyes. I'm just curious to know what opportunity was missed, and whether it is even a Syrphid. It can be frassed then.

Syrphids, definitely.
The single clearest wing vein on the female reveals the famed spurious vein that says syrphid, loud and clear. These do look interesting, but I don't recognize them and am not so hot on eastern species. Good luck on 1)an ID and 2)a reshoot opportunity.
