Laphria scorpio/aeatus grouping - Laphria - female

Laphria scorpio/aeatus grouping - Laphria - Female
Wild River State Park, Chisago County, Minnesota, USA
June 28, 2009
Found in hardwoods near large prairie. About 50 yds in the woods, semi-open area, with some of the older trees blown down. Oak, maple, and misc other trees and berry plants. It never flew far but was tough to track. It was a cooler and very windy day. It didn't stay in the open long, but long enough to get there and take a quick shot.

L. sericea complex
This looks like L. sericea to me. L. aeatus is supposed to be smaller, like index or specially the similar scorpio. The habitat should really be boreal forest for aeatus also. Regarding the thoracic pattern, I have a number of photos of sericea where the thorax looks like this due to lighting. Here's a similar example on BugGuide:

Something
In the aeatus/scorpio grouping with that darker anterior mesonotum and thorax. Nice female.

Thanks again, and
is there a page for this grouping?

There is not
An update paper for the Laphria groups. There is a Michigan key. And the unpublished Bullington PhD which is available from the PhD services on the web.

Bugguide page for scorpio/aeatus?
I was trying to move this posting to the correct bugguide page. See Laphria genus. Will leave at Laphria for now. I may have more photos from this weekend but having trouble discerning scorpio/aeatus from sericea/aktis. I'll try to educate myself a little before posting more of these.
